French Dinner in the West Village: The Classics to Order on West 8th Street

If you are looking for a French restaurant in the West Village, you will find us at 22 West 8th Street. Amélie opened here in 2012, the first Amélie on the East Coast, and dinner has been the same idea ever since: French bistro classics, cooked properly, with a wine list that does the rest.
Here is what to order.
Start with the classics
The dinner menu opens with the dishes people come for:
- French onion soup, with beef broth, croutons and Gruyère, $16
- Escargots, in garlic and parsley butter under puff pastry, $16
- Chicken liver mousse, with pear, red wine gelée, pickled vegetables and onion marmalade, $15
- Hand cut beef tartare, with quail egg, cornichons, capers and harissa sauce, $22
- Filet mignon carpaccio, with Comté, truffle vinaigrette and butter croutons, $19
- Salade Lyonnaise, with frisée, warm bacon, croutons and a poached egg, $17
For something lighter there are Chèvre Chaud (warm goat cheese toast, $18) and the Amélie salad ($16). If the table wants to graze, build a plate from the cheese and charcuterie list: one item for $9, three for $26 or five for $38. A bread basket comes with every order, and an extra one is $3.
The main plates
- Coq au vin, red wine braised chicken legs with lardons, mushrooms, carrots and pearl onions, $29
- Moules frites, mussels steamed in white wine with crème fraîche, celery and shallots, $25
- Steak frites, grass-fed hanger steak with sauce au poivre, $38
- Duck confit, with fingerling potatoes, mushrooms and a garlic frisée salad, $38
- Ravioles du Royans, stuffed with goat cheese, shiitake and creamy squash, $24
- The Amélie burger, dry-aged grass-fed beef with Brie, caramelized onions and aioli, $26
- Fish of the day, at market price (ask your server)
Sides are $8 each. To finish: vanilla crème brûlée ($11), warm pear tarte tatin ($14), profiteroles with warm chocolate sauce and pumpkin ice cream ($14), chocolate mousse ($13) or chocolate fondant with chestnut ice cream ($13). The full dessert and cheese menu is online.
Or the $49 prix fixe
For a set dinner, the prix fixe is three courses for $49. Choose an appetizer (escargots, chicken liver mousse, beef tartare or the Amélie salad), a main (the Amélie burger, coq au vin, ravioles du Royans or moules frites, or steak frites au poivre for $8 more) and a dessert (vanilla crème brûlée or Valrhona chocolate mousse). Tax and gratuity are not included.
Something to drink with it
Amélie is a wine bar, and the list is the other half of dinner: see the wine menu, or read our guide to the wine bar on West 8th Street. Happy hour runs every day, with food from 4 pm to 6 pm; the happy hour menu has the details.
