Lunch in the West Village: A French Bistro Lunch on West 8th Street

If you are looking for lunch in the West Village, Amélie is at 22 West 8th Street. We opened here in 2012, and on weekdays we serve a French bistro lunch from noon to 3:30 pm: a set two-course menu, a proper table, and a glass of wine on the side if the day calls for it.

A French bistro lunch, with a set price

Lunch is a two-course prix fixe, $26, built from the bistro menu's appetizers, entrées and desserts. Add a glass of the wine of the day for $10, in red, orange, sparkling, rosé or white. A bread basket comes with every order, and another is $3.

What to order

Start with something small:

• Chicken liver mousse, with pear, red wine gelée and onion marmalade.
• Escargots à l'ail, in garlic and parsley butter under puff pastry.
• Roasted cauliflower, with squash purée and black garlic, or the soup of the day.

Then pick an entrée. The salade Lyonnaise (frisée, warm bacon, croutons and a poached egg) is the lunch classic. Le croque monsieur comes with ham, béchamel and Gruyère, and a salad on the side. The moules-frites marinière is mussels steamed in white wine with cream and shallots. If you want something heartier, there is the Amélie burger with Brie and caramelized onions, or the steak frites with sauce au poivre. The Niçoise, the burger and the steak frites carry a supplement, marked on the menu.

Finish with the vanilla crème brûlée or the chocolate mousse.

A longer lunch

At heart Amélie is a wine bar, so a glass with lunch is the natural thing to do. Add the wine of the day, or ask your server what is pouring. If lunch turns into the afternoon, happy hour starts at 4 pm, with $1.50 oysters.

When to come

• Lunch, Monday to Friday, 12 to 3:30 pm.
• Brunch, Saturday and Sunday, 11 am to 3:30 pm, with a 90-minute bottomless mimosa for $26.
• Happy hour, every day, 4 to 6 pm.
