A Wine Bar in the West Village: By the Glass, by the Flight, on West 8th Street

A wine bar first, a bistro second
Walk down West 8th Street and you will find us at number 22. Amélie opened here in 2012, the first Amélie on the East Coast, and it has been a neighborhood wine bar ever since. The kitchen is French, the room is warm, there is a sidewalk café for the evenings that ask for one, and the whole idea is simple: pour something good, put something small on the table, and let people linger.
If you are searching for a wine bar in the West Village, here is what you will find when you come in.
The list: 71 wines, in 15 sections
Our Wine Selection menu runs to 71 wines across 15 sections: Champagne and sparkling, rosé, orange and skin-contact wines, whites from the Loire, Burgundy, Bordeaux, the Rhône and Languedoc, Savoie and beyond France, and reds from Burgundy and Beaujolais to the Loire, the Rhône, Languedoc, Bordeaux and beyond.
Two prices sit beside most wines: the first is the glass, the second the bottle. A few examples straight from the menu:
- Château Moncontour Crémant de Loire, a Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay sparkling, $15 a glass or $60 a bottle
- Côté Mas rosé, Pays d'Oc, $14 a glass or $56 a bottle
- Sancerre, Domaine Sautereau, Loire Valley, $22 a glass or $86 a bottle
- Chablis, Alain Pautré, Burgundy, $22 a glass or $86 a bottle
Where a wine shows a single price, it is bottle only. When you cannot choose, ask. Our team pours these wines every night and is happy to steer you toward something you have not tried. The whole list lives on the wine menu.
Happy hour: every day, 4 to 6 pm
If you want the easiest way into the list, come for happy hour. Food is served from 4 pm to 6 pm every day, and the happy hour drinks run from opening until 6 pm:
- Wine of the day, $10 a glass, in white, orange, rosé, red or sparkling
- Happy hour flights, $14: pick one of the six staff flights, or build your own from any three wines by the glass (the price is $19 after 6 pm)
- Cocktails, $10: a lychee martini, a Russian Hill, a Tom Collins or an old fashioned
- Beer, $7
- Oysters, $1.50 each, or six oysters and a glass of wine for $19
- Petits plats, $10 each: croque monsieur bites, beef tartare crostinis, chicken liver mousse, escargots à l'ail, warm pistachio crusted goat cheese or truffle fries
- Early bird special, $26: the Amélie burger with fries, or moules-frites, with a beer or a glass of wine
The staff flights are sorted by style: orange, full reds, dry whites, light reds, a chilled red and sparkling. The light reds flight, for example, puts a Gamay from Beaujolais next to a Cabernet Franc and a Pinot Noir from the Loire Valley, a quick education in how different a light red can be. The full happy hour is on the happy hour menu.
Something to eat with the wine
A wine bar is only as good as what sits next to the glass. At dinner, start with the cheese and charcuterie: you build your own plate, one item for $9, three for $26 or five for $38. Add the French classics: escargots in garlic and parsley butter, French onion soup under melted Gruyère, hand cut beef tartare, steak frites. A bread basket comes with every order, and a second one is $3. The dinner menu has it all, and the bistro menu is the shorter, lighter way to eat.
For a set dinner, there is a three-course prix fixe at $49. On weekends, brunch runs Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 3:30 pm.
